2008 Olympiad Events


Competitors who register before 9/4/2008 will receive a free, commemorative t-shirt. Competitor who register at the Olympiad will receive a free commemorative t-shirt as long as supplies last. Some t-shirts may be available for sale on the days of the events.

Athletes will compete in age and gender categories. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the first three winners in each category.

The fee for each event is shown in the event description section. Standard events are $5 per participant. An all-event participation bracelet for standard $5 events may be purchased for $10 per participant.
This is particularly advantageous for those individuals who plan to compete in more that 2 events over the 4 days of the Olympiad.

Description of Events

 

5k Race to the Rock (Run or Bike) cost: $25.00

Where: Start of the race is in the village of Chimney Rock.
When: Sunday, September 7, Walkers @ 7:30 am, Runners and Cyclists at 8:00 am. The race starts promptly at 8am with bikes preceding runners. Sign-in and same day registration begins at 6:30 am at the Park's entrance.
Who: All athletes up to the challenge. Register here or at www.racedayevents.com or at www.active.com

What: For the first time in the Park’s 100-year history, see it in a way few have, by running or cycling to the top. The race will be a steep, winding 5K climb with an average 7% grade. The race starts in the village and finishes below the 315 foot-tall famous monolith known as Chimney Rock. Awaiting your finish is a 75-mile panoramic view, a network of hiking trails, a multiplicity of unusual geologic features, a stunning 404-foot waterfall and so much more. Concessions will be available after the race by the Chimney Rock Village Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Pre-registered athletes will receive a commemorative 2007 Olympiad tee shirt. Age and gender categories assigned in 5-year increments with the top three in each category receiving gold,silver and bronze medals following the race. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the athletes. Park admission will be half price during the race. The race is being professionally managed Race Day Events

Where: Rumbling Bald Resort Recreation Complex parking lot
When: Saturday, September 6. Race starts at 8:00 am. Sign-in at the Lakeview Restaurant lobby on Friday, September 5th 6-8pm or Saturday, September 6th 6:00-7:30am.

1 Mile Family Fun Run - cost: $5.00

Where: Start on the beach at Rumbling Bald Resort – Finish on beach)
When: Friday, September 5, 7:15 pm (arrive by 6:30 pm to sign in)
Who: All ages (Run or Walk)
What: Great family event following the Boat Parade and Water Ski Show. After the run there will be the lighting of the Olympiad Torch, Free Ice Cream and a dance with live music.
The first boy and girl age 10 or under will receive a gold medal. First 3 men and women will receive medals

Baseball Speed Throw cost: $5.00

Where: Lake Lure Town Park
When: Saturday, September 6, 12:00 noon – 3:00 pm
Who: Age categories: 5-14 Boys and Girls
What: Participant throws 5 baseballs (hard ball) at target. Speed gun used to determine
fastest throw. Three medals awarded for each category, male and
female.

Basketball 3x3 Tournament – Round Ball Mania! cost: $5.00

Where: Rumbling Bald Resort
When: Saturday, September 6, 9:00 am until conclusion based on the number of teams
Who: Ages 18 and under; 19 – 29; 30 and over; Male and Female
What: 3x3, half-court, single elimination tournament. Teams of 4 people, with one as
a substitute.

Cheerleading Competition cost: $10.00 per member

Where: Town of Lake Lure, Morse Park (next to visitors' center)
When: Saturday, September 6, 8:00am - 12:00noon. Registration opens at 8:00am; competition begins at 9:00am.

Cheerleading Clinic cost: $16.00 per child

Where: Town of Lake Lure, Morse Park (next to visitors' center)
When: 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Golf Tournament

Cost: see description

Varies with membership status

Where: Bald Mountain Course, Rumbling Bald Resort
When: Thursday, September 6. 8:00am Shotgun (arrive by 7:30am).
Who: All ages. Men and women flights. Sign up as individuals or 4 person teams.
What: 18 hole medal play
Categories: Medals awarded for individual gross and net and 4-person (2 best ball net) team play. Each player participates in five nearest the pin contests and golf skills
Cost: All players pay $25 to the "Olympiad"

Premier Members pay Regular Member Fee to BMGC - $25 to the "Olympiad- Total $25
POA Members but not Premier Members - $40 to BMGC, $25 to the "Olympiad- Total $65
Non-Members - $45 to BMGC, $25 to the "Olympiad- Total $70

What: Compete in five skills; Drive, Mid-iron, Sand Trap, Pitch and Putt.

Horseshoes Tournaments (Singles and Doubles) cost: $5.00

Where: Geneva Motel and Tiki Bar, in the back, Chimney Rock Village
When: Saturday, September 6, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Who: Open field; no age or gender categories until number of participants increases
What: Singles and Doubles. You can participate in both singles and doubles
NHPA Modified Rules. Single elimination.

What: What else! A 50 – yard dash against the clock. One try. Three best times in
each age group win medals.

Sand Volleyball –“ Spike Fest at the Gorge” cost: $5.00
Where: Lake Lure Town Beach – Sign-in at 8 at Beach Pavilion – breakfast available
When: Saturday, September 6, 9:00 am until conclusion based on the number of teams
Who: 16 years and over; Triples co-ed
What: Triples co-ed tournament. Two games to 11 each with top three in finals, if no
more than 6 teams sign up. If more than 6 teams, tournament will be single
elimination games to 15 with two left in championship game.
Limit: Maximum is 15 teams. Minimum is 4 teams.

Tennis Doubles Tournament cost: $5.00
Where: Rumbling Bald Resort – Women’s Doubles, Men’s Doubles
When: Saturday, September 6, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
Who: Ages 16 and over
Men’s Doubles – 16 teams
Women’s Doubles – 16 teams
What: Single Elimination; 15 minute warm-up; 40 minute play; highest number of
games after 40 minutes is winner of match. There will no add scoring. Balls provided. Bring your water bottles. More than 15 minutes late, team forfeits match. Schedule provided to
you in advance of the Olympiad date.

Pontoon Boat Challenge cost: $5.00
Where: On Lake Lure. Event begins at Lake Lure Golf and Beach Marina
When: Friday, September 5. any time between 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Who: All ages. M/W. One Captain and any number of crewmembers up to 8.
Must use a legally registered boat for use on Lake Lure.

What:
While motoring, the Challenge will consist of problem solving and
elements of a scavenger hunt.

Kayak Sprints cost: $5.00

Where: The Beach at Rumbling Bald Resort
When: Saturday, September 6, 9:00 am – 10:30 am
Who: All ages, Male and Female
What: 1-mile course for ages 12 and under; teenage boys and girls;
M/W 65+
2-mile course for M/W ages 20 – 34; 35 – 49; 50 – 64
Recreational kayaks, paddles, and life jackets will be provided.

Long Distance Swim cost: $5.00

Where: The Beach at Rumbling Bald Resort

Who: All ages
What: Swimmers will be timed individually and monitored by an EMS rescue boat
100-meter short course for ages 12 and under
200-meter medium course for boy and girl teenagers and 65 and up
400- meter long course for M/W, ages 20 – 34; 35 – 49; 50 - 64

Mountain Bike Sprint cost: $5.00

What: Individually timed ¼ mile race on a mini bike. Bikes and helmets provided.

Youth Group Competition Event

Opening Ceremonies cost: None

Where: The Beach at Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure
When: Friday, September 5,  5:30 pm – 11:00 pm
What: Although several events will have been completed, the Opening Ceremonies kicks off an exciting weekend of athletics, competition and home town fun. The evening features a colorful Boat Parade, an athletic Water Ski Show, a tasty barbeque, an enjoyable 1 mileFamily Fun Run, a rigoroug 5 mile run, and the dramatic lighting of the Olympiad Torch. If that isn't enough, the night is capped off with free ice cream and dancing to live music on the terrace of the Lakeview Restaurant. Come out and be part of the celebration.

Where: The Beach at Rumbling Bald Resort
When: Friday, September 5,  5:30 pm
– 6:00 pm
What: LakeEdge Realty once again is sponsoring the annual summer boat parade which this year has been integrated into the Olympiad’s Opening Ceremony. Call the Lake Guys to enter a boat or just enjoy the festivities at 6:00 pm on Friday, September 5, at the beach at Rumbling Bald Resort.

Water Ski Show cost: None

Where: The Beach at Rumbling Bald  Resort
When: Friday, September 5,  6:00 pm – 6:45 pm
What: Also part of the Opening Ceremonies, the Lake Lure Ski Club will put on a water ski show. Local residents will demo wake boarding including flips, skiing pyramids, barefoot skiing and much more!

Cookout - Bat Cave Vounteer Firefighters cost: Food items individually priced - proceeds to charity

Where: The Beach at Rumbling Bald Resort
When: Friday, September 5, 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm
What: While watching the Boat Parade and Water Ski Show and waiting for the front runners in the 1 mile Family Fun Run and 5 mile run, you’ll want to partake in a old-fashioned, southern barbeque dinner. This food fest is put on by Hickory Nut Gorge Volunteer Firefighters.

Ice Cream Social and Live Music cost: None

Where: Lakeview Restaurant Terrance
When: Friday, September 5, 8:30 pm – 11:00 pm
What: Ice Cream Social and Dance- After the completion of the Fun Run and medal presentation, join us on the terrace of the Lakeview Restaurant for some free ice cream sundaes and then dance to the live music by “Quarter inch Jacks”. This was a big hit in 2007 with kids and adults of all ages.

 

 

Shepherd’s Care Breakfast cost: Food items individually priced - proceeds to charity

What: The biggest and best shag dance this area has ever seen! The Olympiad IV joins with the Lake Lure Shag Club to present “shagging on the beach” – Lake Lure style.
This event includes a shag demonstration, a professional DJ 'Fessa John Hook.
