SPRINT TRIATHLON

When
Saturday, August 29 at 8:00 a.m.

What
This year marks the 5th Annual Lake Lure Triathlon, which is the anchor event in a weekend of festivities and athletic competition dubbed the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad. It is without a doubt the most scenic triathlon in the TrySports Series. Home to beautiful Lake Lure, Chimney Rock State Park and the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa, there is no lack of beauty to amaze the senses. The triathlon is hosted by Rumbling Bald Resort which is nestled at the base of the majestic 2,800-foot Rumbling Bald Mountain on the north end of Lake Lure.

Swim
The 500m lake swim commences on a sandy beach, curves around a buoy and finishes right at the transition area, which is within 50 feet of the lake. The clear mountain water is smooth as glass and should be close to 80 degrees in August. Scenes from the movie "Dirty Dancing" were filmed on this lake!

Bike
The 16.9 mile bike course is challenging, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking views as it rolls through the countryside at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You will finish back at the same transition area.

Run
The 5k run is a steady but reasonable uphill that winds up a beautiful valley paralleling Bald Mountain Golf Course and then a gentle downhill to a beach finish beside Lake Lure.

Age and gender groups are assigned in age increments with the top three in each category receiving gold, silver and bronze medals.

This charity event is unique because it is family friendly with a full weekend of activities and sport competitions beginning with a golf tournament on Thursday, a challenging five mile run, ski show, dance, and fireworks on Friday, triathlon sprint, tennis and volleyball tournaments plus kids' games and Dragon Boat races on Saturday and a bike/run to Chimney Rock on Sunday.

Complimentary Extras
-Gold, silver and bronze medals
-Iced neck towel
-2009 Commemorative Olympiad T-shirt for all athletes
-Water and nutritional snacks on the other side of the Finish Line
-Goody bag

Testimonials

Martin Coleman of
RaceDay Events

"The first three years [of the Lake Lure Triathlon] saw the fastest growth of any
triathlon I have ever been associated with in my 22 years in the triathlon community.”

Kathy Scourby of
Knoxville, T.N.

“The Hickory Nut Gorge Triathlon has always been my favorite triathlon each year.
A very well run event, lots of volunteers, a great finish on the beach and the most beautiful
scenery in this part of the country!!  You can't ask for more than that!”
[2007]

***************

Ken Brown, 65, of Snellville, G.A. who participated in all three races in 2008.

“I had a great time in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock.  The events were fun and offered
me a challenge.  Race management was superior and volunteers were plentiful and very
helpful.  I had an overwhelming ‘sense of community togetherness’ the moment I got into town.
This was truly a great three-day vacation for me.  This past weekend will go down as one of my best memories.”

Nicole Howe of
Knoxville, T.N.

“The thing I remember most about the Hickory Nut Gorge Triathlon is being greeted,
directed, and encouraged by the nicest volunteers I've ever encountered in a race. And
crossing the finish line on the beach to the cheers of the crowd made me feel like I had
won the gold at Athens! I can't wait to do it again!” [2007]
